With energy prices steadily rise, homeowners are looking for ways to reduce their energy bills. One way to do this is a solar panel or panels in order to generate electricity. Solar panels not only generate electricity from a renewable source, but there are no by-products that are harmful to the environment as conventional sources can be. For someone who is interested in this form of energy, they may wonder how solar panels are made. This article pertains to this topic, with particular attention to the photovoltaic cell.

A solar panel is composed of many photovoltaic cells (PV). A cell is the main unit of the panel. A photovoltaic cell is made up of a crystalline silicon, which was added phosphorus and boron. One side or layer of silicon cell phosphorus added while the other layer has added boron. This is known as doping. At the atomic level, this has the effect of creating a free electron on the side which is doped with phosphorus. Since an electron a negative charge to the protons positive charge, it is this side of the silicon cell is known as the n-type.

The other layer is exactly the opposite. Due to the boron doping, has a deficiency of electrons. These are sometimes referred to as positive holes who browses submitted by electrons. This layer is known as the p-type to give this positive charge.

When the two layers are connected to each other, causes the flow of electrons from the negative to the positive side to fill in the holes, so to speak, reversing the polarity of each side.

If sunlight is added to this situation is the effect of knock an electron loose on the positive side. This ensures that the electrons back to the negative side. If this electron can be accommodated by an electrically conductive channel, the flow of electrons can be converted into electrical current. This is direct current (DC) which can be stored in a battery or converted into alternating current and used to power household appliances.

However, a cell is not able to provide sufficient current to drive a device, connected to each other so that cells forming modules. One module is a number of PV cells connected in series. As a result, the voltage of the module and consequently the amount of current generated to increase.

A solar panel consists of different modules. Depending on the number of modules, the amount of energy which will be varied by the panel. Putting together a solar panel is a complex procedure and should be done by a number of professionals in various fields.

You can even make your own solar panels (or panels if you link the cells into modules and modules into panels) copper instead of silicon. Yet most solar cells that result will be inefficient and will create a lot of power. They are not really a practical solution for home use.
