The cost of the solar panels is very high, so we decided to learn how solar panels plans to build our own. For our off grid we walk home would need about 3000 watts of output power and that would cost more than $ 10,000 to purchase new us. After some deliberation and quite a bit of research we discovered a set of plans that provide us with all the information we needed. The main part covers how to install solar panels, but there was a very good chapter on how we build our own. There was even a section on where to find free solar panels when we got the five books together, in a so-called Renewable Energy Solutions.
We have right to start with a piece of plywood as a support plate on which to mount the individual cells. We have chosen to work in our studio, because there is soldered to be done and we want to work in a well ventilated area. Keep that in mind when you start.
I am a kind of a safety-conscious person and always has been that we wear eye and hand protection if necessary.
The wires are soldered to the back side of the cells, one positive and one negative. We found that the cells on the source mentioned in the guide.
Just a dab of solder wires and fishing through holes in the plywood on the back.
Align the cells in rows, so it is easier to put later. They are attached to the plywood with a little silicone caulking- not too much if you have a mess on your hands.
The positive lead wires before you solder all be combined into one large wire. The same happens with the negative wires. Get these main wires to the outside of the board, and then sandwich the entire back with another thin piece of plywood.
A bit of a spacer around the outer edge makes a good frame and holds the wires from being cracked.
We would like to place a sheet of tempered glass on top of the solar cells as well. With a bit of trimming the glass can be held in place nicely with a number of screws and silicones. It looks really professional when you’re done.
How much do we save?
All told, we can build a 100 watt solar panel for less than $ 200, although prices fluctuate, yours will too. That is about 30% of the cost of buying a new one.
