Additionally, it was discovered that International Rectifier (IR) had already demonstrated the world’s first solar-powered car, a 1912 model of the Baker Electric, as early as 1958. Following this achievement, solar panels gained traction among commercial, industrial, and military customers.

So why did it take nearly fifty years for solar panels to become widely available to consumers? Organizations like Southface, a non-profit sustainable-living organization in the USA, suggest that solar-cell technology struggled to compete with falling prices in the fossil-fuel market during the nineties.
